Resolution Protecting the Room Tax Approved at Neillsville City Council Meeting

-The Neillsville City Council approved sending a resolution to Governor Scott Walker and area representatives in Madison. The resolution is opposing changes to the way funds collected by a room tax are distributed. A new law being considered would make municipalities turn over 70% of the funds collected from a room tax to an unelected tourism entity or commission. That would mean the City of Neillsville would no longer have control of those funds they collect and distribute from the room tax. The city uses those funds for Chamber events, the Jail Museum and much more.
The council also approved an agreement with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation in regards to the Connect Communities Program. The city applied for this a couple months ago and they were one of 20 communities selected to take part. With this program, it opens the city to many valuable resources and grants. The only issue raised was that a committee would need to be formed as some of the information needed for the program is budget information and only city created committees can have any part of that. This program is for two years and then the city would need to decide if they want to be a part of it again after that.
