New Study Suggests More Green Space Around Elementary Schools May Develop Better Memory in Kids

Sunday, June 21st, 2015 -- 6:37 AM

(AP) -A new study suggests putting more green space around an elementary school may help students develop some mental abilities.

Researchers found that pupils from schools with more surrounding green space tended to do better than kids from schools with less green space on tests of attentiveness and a specific kind of memory.

The study tracked more than 2,000 students in 36 primary schools in Barcelona, Spain. The pupils were in the second to fourth grades when the study began. Researchers said green space may help mental development in part by reducing air pollution from vehicles and noise, as well as encouraging physical activity.

The study was released Monday by the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
