President Obama's Trade Agenda Faces a Steep Hill in the House

Monday, June 1st, 2015 -- 8:46 AM

(AP) -President Barack Obama's trade agenda faces an even steeper hill in the House than it did in the Senate.

Anti-trade forces have struggled to foster public outrage over Obama's effort to enact new free-trade agreements. But Democratic opposition remains widespread. The outcome may turn on Republicans' willingness to hand Obama a major victory in his final years in office.

House leaders are looking at the second or third week of June to schedule a vote, even though House members return to work Monday from their holiday break. Supporters and opponents of the trade authority legislation count about 20 House Democrats in favor, with fewer than a dozen still on the fence. Proponents say they need at least 25 Democrats to counter the 40 to 50 Republicans expected to vote no.
