(Wisconsin Ag Connection) - It's been quite a year for America's Dairyland. The USDA's latest monthly milk production report shows that Wisconsin dairy farmers produced 2.39 billion pounds of milk in April, up four percent from April 2014, but lower than March's 2.43 billion pounds, partly because April had less days on the calendar.
This makes 12 consecutive months that monthly output exceeded year-ago levels. Nationally, 16.6 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was up 1.7 percent higher than in 2014, but less than the previous month's 16.9 billion.
Meanwhile, the number of milk cows in the major dairy states totaled 8.62 million head, 77,000 head more than April 2014, and 2,000 head more than March 2015. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.27 million head. Production per cow averaged 1875 pounds, up 60 pounds from a year ago.
