Owen-Withee School Board Approves Early Graduation Request

-The Owen-Withee School Board approved an early graduation request at their meeting last week. The board listened to an administration request to waive one of the provisions in policy 345.61 or Early Graduation. Current policy requires a student have completed four semesters to qualify for early graduation. A student who transferred to the Owen-Withee District in his junior year is interested in early graduation, but would only have completed two semesters. The Board unanimously approved waiving the four semester requirement, allowing this student to pursue early graduation. All other requirements must be met for the Board to give final approval.
The Board approved a 66.031 agreement with the Loyal School District that will allow Brian Lewison to teach two social studies courses to Loyal students via the distance learning network each semester. The agreement calls for Loyal to pay for 2/7ths of the cost of Mr. Lewison's salary and benefits. This could generate roughly $17,000 for the district next year.
Finally, as part of a grant application completed by one of the district's English classes last winter, District Administrator Bob Houts had some gym floor designs created by Baseman's Flooring. Houts shared the designs with the Board and gave cost estimates of approximately $25,000 to complete the project. No action was taken by the Board and none is planned at this time as it was simply informational. One suggestion that did come out of the discussion was the idea of "crowd funding" which is an internet-based way of gathering donations, especially popular with non-profit organizations. The gym floor or bleacher replacements were suggested projects that could utilize this type of fund raising.
