Local Man Wins Webby Award for Mall of America's Twizzard Campaign

Friday, May 15th, 2015 -- 12:32 PM

-A local man has the honor of joining Jimmie Kimmel, Ellen DeGeneres, Ted, Ellie Kemper and more as being a 2015 Webby Award winner.

Christopher Grap, the Senior Manager of Experiential Marketing at the Mall of America, was one of the brains behind the Mall of America's Twizzard Campaign. The Twizzard was a "snowfall," actually just soap and water, triggered by Tweets from shoppers during the Thanksgiving weekend. In order for the snow to fall, the mall asked Twitter users to send 1,000 messages with the #Twizzard during the Thanksgiving weekend. If they were successful, the lights would change, Let it Snow would play and the snow would come down.

The campaign was very effective for the mall with the term #Twizzard trending to number 1 in Minneapolis that weekend. The Twizzard tweets reached around 43 million people, according to preliminary numbers.

Chris Grap was selected as the winner of the Social Experimental and Innovation Webby Award. The award is defined as "the most innovative or cutting-edge social media experiences that break ground and suggest the way ahead." Chris's teammates include Emily Shannon, Carter Jensen, Mohamed Sakallah, Erin Vande Steeg, Alisha Yost, Emily Yang and Jared Carrigan.

The star-studded Webby Awards Ceremony will be held this Monday in New York hosted by comedian Hannibal Buress and judged by the likes of Conan O'Brien. Congratulations to Christopher Grap and Mall of America's Twizzard.
