Thursday, May 14th, 2015 -- 8:12 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -America's Dairyland stayed true to its name in 2014 as the state set another record for total milk production.

The latest government figures from USDA confirmed that Wisconsin produced 27.7 billion pounds of milk last year, slightly higher than the previous record of 27.6 billion pounds harvested in 2013. Milk per cow also rose to an all-time high of 21,869 pounds.

As of January 1, there were 10,081 licensed milk cow operations in the state. That was down 460 from a year ago. That number has since fallen to below 10,000. Meanwhile, Wisconsin's overall livestock inventory did declined last year. As of January 1, about 3.34 million head of cattle were counted in the state, down 100,000 head from the previous year.

The number of milk cow numbers held steady at year's end at 1.27 million head--keeping Wisconsin second behind California for number of milk cows.
