-A Marshfield woman who stole over $10,000 from her mother was sentenced in Wood County Court on Tuesday.Holly Sterling was given power of attorney over her mother's finances after she was placed into the Marshfield Care Center. Authorities began investigating Sterling when the Marshfield Care Center was owed $10,933.
Sterling's mother would receive about $1,200 in Social Security benefits and $420 from a retirement account. Sterling said she used that money for bills. She was given time to repay that money, but she only made a few payments.
During her court appearance Tuesday morning, Sterling was found guilty, due to a no contest plea, of theft of moveable property. The charge had been reduced from embezzlement due to the plea agreement reached between the district attorney and defense. Sterling was ordered to pay $500 plus $7,239 in restitution. Earlier this month, Sterling posted a $5,000 cash bond that was set by the judge after her lawyer tried to have her plea hearing rescheduled again. That money will be used towards the restitution.
