-A Special Neillsville City Council meeting was held Tuesday afternoon regarding Worker's Compensation Insurance.Jackie Torgerson, the city's representative at United Heartland Insurance, held a presentation about worker's comp and ways to reduce that cost. The City of Neillsville saw a substantial increase in the premiums for their worker's comp insurance, but the city must have it. According to the figures provided, the city is paying 61% more in premiums compared to other similar sized cities. A few years ago, the city was paying $27,888, but, due to the large number of claims the past few years, the city is now paying $62,000.
Jackie provided tips on how to lower that cost, including having modified duty for those that are hurt. She explained that with worker's comp, you want to have just the one time medical claim vs an indemnity claim, where an individual stays home and is paid 2/3 of their wages. Neillsville has seen high cases of indemnity. She also said that the city should take more time with accident investigations so they can identify ways to avoid similar accidents in the future.
