March Milk and Dairy Cattle Report

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) - For the eleventh consecutive month, Wisconsin dairy farmers shipped more milk when compared to year-ago levels.According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, the Dairy State produced 2.43 billion pounds of milk in March, up 3.6 percent from March 2014, and more than February's 2.0 billion pounds. Nationally, 16.9 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was up 1.1 percent higher than in 2014, and greater than the previous month's 15.1 billion.
Meanwhile, the number of milk cows in the major dairy states totaled 8.62 million head, 86,000 head more than March 2014, but 4,000 head fewer than February 2015. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.27 million head. Production per cow averaged 1,910 pounds, up 60 pounds from a year ago.
