Wisconsin's Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week, Part 3
Thursday, April 16th, 2015 -- 12:00 PM
-This week is Wisconsin's Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week.John Ross, Clark County's Emergency Management Director, talked about steps people can take to be prepared during the tricky Wisconsin weather this time of year.
He said, "One of the biggest things that you can do is have one of the All Hazards Radio in your home. And make sure it has fresh batteries in it. I like to refer to it as the weather smoke detector. It's designed to have the alert tone sound to get your attention and provide that emergency information as quickly as possible. Check the batteries. Make sure they're good so if the power fails the radio will still work."
"Have a plan for your house. Know where you're going to go in the event of an emergency. Whether it's sheltering from severe weather or whether it's evacuating your house if you had to in the event of such a thing as a fire. Have that disaster supply kit. If a tornado comes through and the powers out, it may be a significant amount of time before you're able to get back to a sense of normal. Having those supplies to take care of yourself and your family for those first three days is a good idea."
"You want to think about the basics of life: water, food and warmth. Don't forget about things such as important documents. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about storing medications and follow their advice in doing that. It's not a fun to think about. It's not something that's pleasant to talk about, but it's important that you do."
Coming up on Friday, John offers advice to those that seem to think a disaster can't happen to them.
