Wisconsin's Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week, Part 2
Wednesday, April 15th, 2015 -- 11:41 AM
-This week is Wisconsin's Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week.John Ross, Clark County's Emergency Management Director, said that people should treat the drill on Thursday as if it was a real tornado and go to your place of shelter.
He said, "I would pretend that it's a real tornado. I would move quickly to that area of safety in the building that you're in, whether it's school or at home or at work. Know where those safe areas are. It's ideally a basement. If you don't have a basement then you want to get into an interior room with no windows if you can. Put as many walls as you can between you and the outside. In a mobile home you want to get out and find an alternate shelter. If you're in a vehicle, you want to get out of the vehicle and get into a low lying area and cover your head. At school, in public buildings, know where those areas are. But think about it ahead of time. When you're practicing the drill, pretend it's real. Go to the basement. If you're unable to shelter in your own home, know where that shelter point is and practice going there. See how much time, in reality, it's going to take you to get there."
Coming up on Thursday, John offers tips on how to be prepared this time of year for the tricky Wisconsin weather.
