-A La Crosse man was sentenced for the death of a Neillsville woman in Clark County Court this morning. In December of 2012, 19-year-old Monica Cooper passed away and an autopsy at the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office determined she died of a heroin overdose.
During the investigation, it was determined that Reavon Taylor was the alleged source of the heroin. He had been charged with 1st degree reckless homicide, but due to a deal reached between the state and defense, the charge was changed to manufacturing/delivering heroin. The state agreed to reduce the charge if the defense would stipulate to the state's sentencing recommendation which is 3 years in prison and 3 years of extended supervision.
The state did ask for that sentence during the hearing. The defense asked for 2.5 years in prison and 5 years extended supervision. In the end, citing the need to protect the community, the gravity of the situation and Taylor's past, the judge issued a sentence of 6 years in prison and 3 years extended supervision.
