-The Neillsville Police Department received several complaints of credit card fraud occurring between March 13th and March 26th in the City of Neillsville.According to a press release from the department, this fraud affected customers from three local banking institutions. Their investigation revealed all incidents involved one Neillsville business. This business was contacted and it was learned they were the victim of a nationwide cyber-attack involving Poseidon POS Malware that originated out of China. This malware is designed to access POS, or Point of Sale, systems to collect customer credit card information.
Businesses using Windows XP operating systems are most at risk. Data breaches world-wide occurred at the astonishing rate of 5,840 attacks every 45 minutes. The involved Neillsville business has since discontinued use of their POS systems and have put security measures in place to protect their customers.
The United States Secret Service and the Neillsville Police Department continue to investigate the data breach. At this time the breach does not appear to have affected any other local businesses.
