Clark County's Child Death Review Team, Final

Monday, March 30th, 2015 -- 11:31 AM

-Clark County is working together to prevent child injuries and deaths.

Did you know injury is the leading cause of death for Wisconsin residents ages 1 to 44? Each year more than 150 Wisconsin children die from an injury. Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin leads the Keeping Kids Alive in Wisconsin program and that program is comprised of Child Death Review teams in each county or region.

Brittany Mews, an RN with the Clark County Health Department, and Detective Kerry Kirn, with the Clark County Sheriff's Department, are a part of the Clark County Child Death Review Team and they explained initiatives they do to educate the community on keeping their children safe.

Brittany: "The Health Department runs a program called Clark County Cribs for Kids and basically what it is is a safe sleep program. The focus is on educating families on safe sleep practices and then also providing a portable pack-n-play crib for those families in need. We also have a focus on child passenger safety. Both the Health Department and Memorial Medical Center have child passenger safety technicians. We currently offer free car seat checks to any caregiver in Clark County and we initially have a program to assist low income families with providing them with a new seat. We also are beginning to focus on farm safety and those initiatives are in the beginning planning and implementation phase."

To end our interview, Detective Kirn talked about how unique the program is and Brittany mentioned places you can go to find more information.

Kerry: "Child Death Review is really a unique process. All the members on the team bring their own unique skill set to the table and enhance the overall process for Clark County citizens. It's just an excellent program."

Brittany: "You can find out more information about the Child Death Review Team and prevention efforts by visiting the Clark County Sheriff's Office Facebook Page as well as the Clark County Health Departments' Facebook Page. Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin also has numerous child injury and prevention resources on their website."
