Clark County Health Department Pleased with County's Health Ranking

Friday, March 27th, 2015 -- 9:38 AM

-A new county health rankings report released by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation ranks Clark County residents in the top half of healthiest in the state compared to other counties in terms of health outcomes.

County Health Rankings examine the health and well-being of people living in nearly every county in every state across the nation and show that how long and well people live depends on multiple factors. Researchers used five primary measures to assess the level of overall health or "health outcomes" for each county: the rate of people dying before age 75, the percent of people who report being in fair or poor health, the number of days people report being in poor physical and poor mental health, and the rate of low birthweight infants.

The report also looks at factors that affect people's health within four categories: health behavior, clinical care, social and economic factors, and physical environment.

In a press release issued by the Clark County Health Department, Clark County Health Officer Robert Leischow stated, "The County Health Rankings and other data sources provide indicators of health status that play a vital role in planning for services. Though there are clear opportunities for improvement, there are assets and resources in Clark County and elsewhere that can be and are being leveraged as we strive to become a healthier county. This information offers a call-out to health care organizations, municipalities, businesses, schools, and individuals to come together to address health in this county," Leischow added. "Through existing and new partnerships in the community, we are poised to reinforce our accomplishments and explore new strategies."
