2015 Off to an Exciting Start for Clark County 4-H, Part 3

Monday, March 23rd, 2015 -- 12:04 PM

-The Clark County 4-H has already been involved in some great events with plenty more on the horizon.

Chris Hollar, Clark County's 4-H Youth Development Agent, talked about 4-H members needing to take two educational classes to handle and sell the animals for this year's fair and where they can take those classes.

Chris said, "With the livestock folks, anyone who's selling an animal has to participate in two educational credit courses, so they have a little bit more knowledge about their animal before they sell it."

"One of those things that's a requirement from the state is called our MAQA: Meat Assurance, Quality Assurance. That way we now we have a quality product here. This year's topic is on animal handling which is a huge thing across the United States, just making sure our animals are handled properly."

"So, we've been working with some of the vocational education directors. They help with teaching it and typically it's taught in Ag curriculum already, but since with 4-H we have a lot of young students, 3rd up to 8th grade, that may not necessarily in those classes that need to have those educational credits. So, the MAQA is a specific one. We have three training dates coming up for people to hop into those classes because this one is required. And then they can, it's most appropriate, to do another class in their species, so if you get sheep you're supposed to a sheep fitting clinic, beef is beef fitting and so on and so forth so you know a little bit more about your animal."

"One class we had is already done. That happened on Thursday in Thorp. April 9th in Granton. Cheryl Steinbach is going to be facilitating that one and that will be at 7pm. And on Monday, May 11th, at Greenwood High School Lindsay Meissner will be facilitating that one at 7pm. I'll be at all three of them."

Coming up on Tuesday, we'll hear about some of the 4-H's summer camp opportunities.
