A Marshfield man charged in connection with the death of a Spencer man appeared in Marathon County Court.
At the end of December, a fur trapper found the body of 20-year-old Christian Schauer in a wooded area of the McMillian Marsh. Shawn Carl and his son Jared Carl were arrested earlier in February after Schauer’s vehicle was found on their property.
Initially, according to Jared Carl, Schauer came to their property on December 29th. He and his father got into an SUV and drove into a field. Jared stated he remained in the SUV while his father got into Schauer’s car to speak with him.
Jared stated they talked for about 10 minutes before his father shot Schauer 5 to 6 times. However, towards the end of last month, a woman allegedly involved with the incident offered a different story.
Audry Benson stated that she and Schauer were friends and they met with Jared Carl and drove to the McMillian Marsh to smoke marijuana. She said she got out of the vehicle to use the bathroom and heard what sounded like a BB gun.
When she went back to the vehicle Jared was removing Schauer’s body and holding a gun. When Benson was questioned by authorities on December 30th, she didn’t tell them any of this information.
Shawn Carl appeared in Marathon County Court. He’s facing charges of harboring/aiding a felon, resisting or obstructing an officer, possessing a machine gun, selling a firearm silencer, and theft of moveable property. He entered a not guilty plea to the charges against him. He’ll be back in court on April 27th for a motion hearing.
Jared Carl is now being held on a $1 million cash bond and is facing homicide charges as well as other charges. His father is being held on a $55,000 cash bond. Benson is being held on a $15,000 cash bond and is facing charges of harboring a felon and others.
