98 Private and Religious Schools Register for the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2015 -- 9:40 AM

-The Department of Public Instruction received registrations from 98 private and religious schools and school systems by the February 2nd deadline to accept students for the 2015-16 school year through the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program.

Schools registering for the statewide choice program include the 31 continuing from the 2014-15 school year, and 36 new private schools applying to participate. An additional 31 schools registering for the statewide voucher program already participated in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program or the Racine Parental Choice Program during the 2014-15 school year.

The WPCP allows new students whose family income is at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level and who reside outside of the Milwaukee and Racine Unified school districts to use a taxpayer-funded voucher to attend participating private or religious schools. The private school, under current law, receives a state aid payment for each eligible choice student.

A Clark County School has registered to be a part of the program this year. The Thorp Catholic School for grades 4-8 has an open application period of February through October.
