Owen City Council Hears CDA Report

Thursday, February 19th, 2015 -- 8:18 AM

-An item involving the city employees' health savings account was tabled for more research at the Owen City Council meeting.

City Clerk Terri Ernst reported that under the advisement of the City's insurance broker, several companies contribute the employer's HSA portion at each payroll. Since 2010, the City has been issuing the employees their HSA at the first of the year. If an employee leaves the City during the year, that money is theirs to keep, even if they didn't work the full year. The council approved tabling the issue and having Clerk Ernst look into further information and bring it back to the next meeting.

The council heard the CDA Report from CDA Director Tim Swiggum. He reported that another party is interested in the OMI property near the water tower. The closing of the Woodland should happen at the end of February. The Downtown Revitalization Committee met and will meet again next week. It's difficult to form a quorum because there are so many members. The railroad building will be looked at for asbestos and the Dollar General is looking forward to ground breaking this spring.

Finally, during the public opinion portion of the meeting, a resident asked if the windows in the police department will be blocked. A question was asked if the police department was ever broken in to and it was mentioned that the post office is locked by the police department each evening but not at any set time.
