Owen-Withee School Board Discusses Strategic Plan

Monday, February 16th, 2015 -- 8:17 AM

-The Owen-Withee School Board discussed renewing their Strategic Plan at their meeting last week.

President Julie Wendler brought up the idea of renewing the Strategic Planning process that was completed five years ago. The plan from five years ago produced many of the initiatives that the District has undertaken and was a very positive connection with the community. All board members indicated that they thought it was a good idea. The idea of an outside moderator of the planning process was discussed and a few names were generated.

The board also heard updates from several board members that attended the WASB Convention. Julie Wendler's main take away from the convention was strategic planning and renewing that process here in OW, as mentioned above. Julie attended a number of workshop sessions on strategic planning and networked with board members from other districts on how to best implement the concept.

Paul Heggemeier highlighted two concepts he saw at the convention. First was the idea of adult bullying that may be going on in schools. Many times we only think of student-to-student bullying, but adult-to-adult bullying can occur also. Ways to identify and address this type of bullying were discussed. Paul also brought back the idea of adding a 9th hour to give students more opportunities to take elective courses.

Finally, Rick Eloranta commented on the CVTC trailer that the board toured earlier in the meeting as a great example of what he saw at the convention?providing more opportunities for students in new and creative ways. Rick also commented on the idea of investigating a charter school in something like Montessori or STEM. Seveal board members were interested in this concept.
