Neillsville City Council Passes Highway 10 Expansion Resolution

Thursday, February 12th, 2015 -- 9:20 AM

-The Neillsville City Council approved passing a resolution that calls for expanding Highway 10 to the west of Neillsville into a 4 lane highway.

The resolution came before the council at their meeting at the end of January. It asks that the council support a 4 lane Highway 10 from County Highway B to the west boarder of Clark County. The Wisconsin DOT would use 160 acres of county forest land to build the new lanes. The resolution was voted back to the Planning Commission at the January meeting as the city attorney wanted to change some wording.

At the Planning Commission Meeting held back on February 3rd, most present didn't seem in favor of the project. One individual believes that Osseo should start the project from their end and work towards us. Another believed the new Highway and the possibility of a bypass would destroy the businesses along Hewitt Street and Highway 10. The Clark County Forestry and Parks Department is also opposed to the project due to the major changes to the forest.

One resident for the expansion believes that a 4 lane Highway 10 would be safer and it could have a positive impact on the economy for the area. A representative from the DOT said that there are many more hoops to jump through even if the council approves. An impact study would need to be done and the project would need legislative approval in Madison, twice, before starting.

In the end, the council did approve the resolution, so it will now go before the Clark County Board of Supervisors for approval.
