Clark County's Emergency Managment Director Talks Winter Weather, Part 2

Tuesday, February 10th, 2015 -- 11:07 AM

-With our area being right in the middle of a Wisconsin Winter, it's a good idea for people to be prepared for extreme conditions.

John Ross, Clark County's Emergency Management Director, talked about things you can do to prepare for extreme cold that frequently occurs in Central Wisconsin.

He said, "It's very important to keep in mind if you're going to be outside, for any length of time when the temperatures are really low or the wind chills are really low, hypothermia, frostbite can all set in rather quickly."

"In the cases of wind chills or temperatures in that -20 to -30 range, which we have seen, it can be a matter of a few minutes. Keep skin covered. Dress in layers to stay warm. Wear a hat. Wear gloves. Try to cover up as much as you possibly can. Avoid that direct exposure to your skin because frostbite can happen quickly."

"Avoid alcohol if you're going to be outside. Pay attention to temperature and time that you're going to be outside. Small children? Same thing, dress in layers, cover up that exposed skin and protect them from the potential of frostbite."

"And don't forget about pets. Make sure they have some place of shelter to go to. Make sure they have food and fresh water. Same thing with livestock. Make sure they have shelter and they have water. Pay attention to what's going on and be aware of potential affects that could come about in a rather short time."
