Marshfield Man Dies While Burning Grass in a Ditch

Tuesday, April 6th, 2021 -- 12:00 PM

(WDLB) A Marshfield-area man died while he was burning grass in his ditch.

That incident was reported just after noon Monday on Highway "A" at Marshfield Road, just south of the Highways-10-13 interchange, in the Wood County town of Marshfield.

According to the Wood County Sheriff's Department, a caller reported a fire in a ditch and a person down in the fire.  Upon arrival, emergency personnel found a 79-year-old man dead in the burn area.

It's believed the victim was tending to the burn when he suffered an unknown issue and died in the fire. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff's department says the incident is not believed to be suspicious in nature.

The Wood County Sheriff's Department responded, along with the Wood County Coroner's Office, the Marshfield Fire-and-Rescue Department, and the Richfield and Hewitt Fire Departments.
