Representative Bob Kulp's Listening Session in Marshfield, State vs. Federal

Wednesday, February 4th, 2015 -- 11:40 AM

-Representative Bob Kulp was in our area on Monday of last week, holding listening sessions for residents to voice their concerns.

One issue brought up was why our state government seems to be more responsive than the federal government.

He said, "There is, I think, greater responsiveness because it"s a smaller entity than the federal government. Whether there's an active process in place, I would say you have the Small Business Regulatory Review Board that kind of is a sounding board. You'd have much closer representation."

"I can tell you from our perspective, the most challenging things are when the federal government, be it Fish and Wildlife or the EPA, brings down a mandate to us at the state that will effect us adversely. We as a, pretty much, unit in the assembly, and in the senate, go out and write letters to the federal agencies. It reminds me, just a little bit, of kicking Goliath's shins. Does Goliath really get the word if you're just out there kicking his shin. It's the only thing we can do, but that's the bigger challenge, the federal government's mandates."

"Whether it's in education or Fish and Wildlife or the EPA, there are so many ways that the federal government's reach comes into our world. We also have the "Right the Rules process," which we're thinking of re-branding as "Red Tape Review," which is, basically, looking at the government's mandates and asking does this make sense?

Representative Kulp was in Granton, Marshfield and Abbotsford.
