Representative Bob Kulp's Listening Session in Marshfield, Budget Deficit and Property Taxes
Monday, February 2nd, 2015 -- 11:53 AM
-Representative Bob Kulp was in our area on Monday, holding listening sessions for residents to voice their concerns. One issue brought up was the deficit and Representative Kulp talked about a bill he'd like to introduce regarding property taxes and how it could help the deficit.
He said, "I have a bill that I'm hoping to introduce that, I don't believe, will go anywhere relative to getting rid of personal property tax. I sat in a symposium this year where we were talking about all the sticky issues."
"It's about a $280 million hit, the way the government looks at it, to the revenue side of the equation. But, you're paying again and again on your book of depreciating assets and then of course the last number of decades we've exempted manufacturing and we've exempted AG."
"And that is really a big hassle and a headache. In the testimony we had in Madison in the three different sessions. The big issue is the assessor community doesn't like it, the CPA Community doesn't like it, the business community doesn't like it. So, you'd think that it'd be easy to get gone."
"The big issue is, the City of Marshfield has $1.5 million a year that it brings in through personal property tax. So, if, all of sudden, we just eliminate that, what do we do to make Marshfield so that others in the city can continue to function the way they are?"
"I'm going to introduce it because I want my name on it because I'm incredibly passionate about it. I would say at this particular time, it's probably not going to happen."
Representative Kulp was in Granton, Marshfield and Abbotsford.
