Representative Bob Kulp's Listening Session in Marshfield, Common Core and School Accountability

Friday, January 30th, 2015 -- 11:13 AM

-Representative Bob Kulp was in our area on Monday, holding listening sessions for residents to voice their concerns.

A couple issues brought up in regards to education were the Common Core Standards and the Assembly and Senate School Accountability Bill.

He said, "AB1 is actually the school accountability bill that is looking at putting everyone who receives public funds on equal footing. Some would argue that it's not equal, but a footing of testing and verification. Of course, you have SB1 on the Senate side, slightly different than AB1. I've gotten letters from school district administrators who are very opposed to AB1, but support SB1. There is a lot of pro and con debate on that. I personally signed on to AB1 because I believe that we need to make sure that our kids have the best education possible."

"Relative to Common Core exactly, it is more difficult thing than to just say lets repeal it in its entirety, which I know some good, well meaning people want to do that. The idea, philosophically behind the whole education debate, and my way of thinking, and I believe I can speak for many others in the Assembly and likely the Senate, is to give as much local control as possible."

"Again, I think, the first thing is to give as much autonomy to local school boards and local school districts to make their own decisions and their own conclusions will be what rules at the end of the day."

Representative Kulp said that because of testing, which is based on the Common Core Standards, it make it impractical to repeal the whole program.

Representative Kulp was in Granton, Marshfield and Abbotsford.
