-A Sheldon man sentenced in Clark County Court on Thursday for drug charges.Back in June of 2014, Jeffrey Mertens was arrested on Highway 29 near Abbotsford after he passed a K9 unit at a high rate of speed. After he was pulled over, the dog indicated there were drugs in the vehicle and the officers found several bags of meth, a meth pipe, a torch and lighter, a digital scale, a pistol holster, a bayonet in a sheath and a bottle of urine. Mertens did tell authorities that he was going to Abbotsford to get more methamphetamine.
Due to a plea deal reached, Mertens plead no contest, and was found guilty of, possession of methamphetamine and carrying a concealed weapon. He was sentenced to 9 months in jail, but due to the time served since his arrest, he's already completed most of that. He was also sentenced to 3 years' probation. Mertens is being held in the Dodge County Jail for other charges not related to this case and he will be released from there in 2016 and have 4 years' probation. The 3 years sentenced to him on Thursday will start after the 4 so he'll have a total of 7 years' probation after he's released from prison.
