Assembly Republicans Attempting to Raise Wisconsin Speed Limit Again

Monday, January 19th, 2015 -- 10:43 AM

(Milwaukee Journal) -Assembly Republicans are making another attempt at raising the speed limit to 70 mph, and they're hoping they can get their Senate colleagues to come along for the ride this time.

The Assembly in 2013 approved hiking the highway speed limit by 5 mph, but the measure died when the Senate declined to back it.

Both houses were controlled by Republicans at the time, as they are now. But the makeup of the Senate has changed significantly because of retirements, and supporters hope to pass the change in the legislative session that began this month.

Rep. Paul Tittl (R-Manitowoc) said he would introduce a bill soon, and an aide to Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) said he wants to pass it this session. Tittl said it's time Wisconsin followed the lead of a host of other states. All Wisconsin's neighbors have maximum speed limits of 70 mph or higher.

His bill, which he will unveil at a news conference Wednesday, would set the maximum speed limit on highways at 70 mph, up from 65 mph. The state Department of Transportation would be the one to determine which stretches saw increased speed limits.
