Pittsville Fire Chief Still Pushing for Restrictions on Novelty Lighters

Monday, January 5th, 2015 -- 9:31 AM

(AP) -A Wisconsin fire chief is continuing to push for state restrictions on novelty lighters.

Six years ago, a group of second-graders asked Pittsville Fire Chief Jerry Minor to help get the law passed.

In 2009, Londa Kuehn's class at Pittsville Elementary School read a story about novelty lighters. Daily Tribune Media reports the lighters are in shapes that would appeal to children, and many don't have child security devices to stop them from being accidentally lit.

Minor has contacted legislators trying to get the law passed. In 2014, state officials held a public hearing on restricting the lighters, but the legislative session ended before it came up for a vote.

State Rep. Scott Krug, a Republican from Rome, says he's sure supporters can get the bill passed this time.
