Clark County Sees Drop In Tobacco Sales To Minors, Final

Friday, January 2nd, 2015 -- 10:14 AM

Businesses in Clark County have seen a tremendous drop in the sale of tobacco to minors this past year due to, in part, the Wisconsin WINS Program.

Laura Betthauser, with the Clark County Health Department, was in charge of the program this year. Laura took an underage volunteer to various businesses that sell tobacco around Clark County and had the minor see if the business would allow them to purchase tobacco. The results found that only 5% sold to the minor in 2014 compared to 24% in 2013.

Laura was very happy to see these results.

She said, "To me that really speaks volumes that we are getting this message out that tobacco sales to youth is detrimental to their health. We're getting the message out to the community that this is an important initiative to uptake. Obviously, retailers believe in this too. It's just a really good thing to keep tobacco out of youth hands as the health effects of tobacco and smoking are awful. It's just really good to see."

Laura hopes Clark County residents will take the time to thank local retailers for helping reduce smoking among minors
