A New Bill Proposal Would Have Judges Retiring at 75

Friday, December 26th, 2014 -- 10:06 AM

A Wisconsin state representative plans to introduce a bill that would force judges to retire at age 75.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports Republican Rep. Dean Knudson, of Hudson, says he plans to push the measure in the upcoming legislative session. The move would require nearly all judges over the age limit to retire immediately or within a matter of months. Reserve and temporary judges would be exempt.

Three state Supreme Court justices would have to step down if the bill passes. Republican Gov. Scott Walker would appoint judges to fill unexpired terms.

Knudson says he is responding to the will of the people. Voters in 1977 directed the Legislature to set a mandatory retirement age no earlier than 70. That requirement hasn't been acted on to date.
