Clark Electric Cooperative Considering Community Solar Project

Tuesday, November 11th, 2014 -- 8:31 AM

-Clark Electric Cooperative is considering the construction of a community solar project.

The project would be a 50-100 kilowatt community solar garden which would be located next to Clark Electric Cooperative's new facility west of Greenwood. The Cooperative is aware that a segment of CEC's membership is more willing to invest in renewable energy. "This project allows them to do that at a more affordable cost than they could otherwise obtain," said Tim Stewart, CEO of the Cooperative.

Though there are many details being worked out, the concept would allow those members interested to purchase a subscription of a unit of renewable solar energy and receive credit equal to their share of the array's output on their electric bill. The shared unit idea would also help deal with the problems individuals face when using solar energy like space for the panels, too many trees, insurance and more.

However, that being said, people wouldn't be able to buy just one array and expect it to power their home. To put kilowatts into perspective, 1.5 kilowatts powers a hairdryer. An estimated subscription in participation would cost anywhere from $500-$1,000 and customers that purchase a subscription could expect to get some payback in 18-20 years.

As of now, the details are still being worked out, the project is in the planning stages and much of the future of the project would be based on consumer interest. If you'd like to learn more you can contact Clark Electric Cooperative.
