Wisconsin Approves State Transportation Referendum/Two Neighboring School Districts' Referendums Approved

Wednesday, November 5th, 2014 -- 2:12 AM

-Wisconsin voters have agreed to change the state constitution to prevent the state transportation fund from being siphoned to pay for other needs.

A bipartisan group of state lawmakers proposed the amendment after the Legislature used $1.4 billion from the existing transportation fund to pay for schools and other expenses between 2003 and 2011. At the same time, the Legislature approved $1.2 billion in borrowing for transportation spending.

The transportation fund includes money collected through the gas tax and fees imposed on driver's licenses and vehicle titles. The amendment that passed Tuesday dedicates the money to road maintenance and construction and other transportation needs.

Three other referendums were passed for two school districts in our area. Voters living within the Black River Falls School District approved a $22,500,000 referendum to dismantle the Third Street School, build new elementary school, and remodel the high school with 2,696 voting yes and 1,759 voting no. Voters living within the Osseo-Fairchild School District approved two referendums, one for $5,500,000 for renovations and technology upgrades, with 1,485 voting yes and 691 voting no, and another for $1,630,000 for operating expenses with 1,179 voting yes and 972 voting no.
