-A Neillsville man was sentenced for sexual assault and incest in Clark County Court Thursday morning.According to the criminal complaint, a 48-year-old Neillsville man began sexually assaulting a relative at the age of 12 and continued until the age of 16.
Back in August, the man pleaded guilty to 2nd degree sexual assault of a child. The remaining three charges, one count of incest with a child and two counts of repeated sexual assault of the same child, were dismissed and read in.
The court heard a very powerful statement from the victim in the matter and the state recommended the man be sentenced to 10 years in jail and 8 years of extended supervision after. The defense asked for a lesser sentence stating that the man knows what he did is wrong and is taking responsibility for it. There was even an individual that spoke on the man?s behalf saying she didn?t believe the victim. The man said he was sorry and asked for forgiveness.
In the end, the judge agreed with the state and sentenced the man to the 10 years in prison and 8 years of extended supervision. He said that he doesn?t believe the man recognizes the nature, seriousness and consequences of his crime. He said the man was shifting the blame and, if given the opportunity, he may do the same thing again.
