September Preparedness Month, Final
Tuesday, September 16th, 2014 -- 11:03 AM
-The thought of your family or business being impacted by a disaster is never a pleasant one. It is however, extremely important to plan ahead and be ready if disaster strikes. That?s why each year the month of September is designated as National Preparedness Month to encourage residents to plan and prepare for disasters which may pose a hazard to them.
John Ross, Clark County?s Emergency Management Director, in light of all the recent rain, talked about what you should do if you encounter a flooded road.
John said, "There have been times that roadways and streets have had water on them. One important safety message there is if you see a roadway or a street that has water covering it, turn your vehicle around and find an alternate route. You don't know what condition that roadway is in under that water. You don't know if the road is intact, you don't know if the road has been washed out. It only takes about a foot of water to move a vehicle. You could be in real trouble if you try to drive through that so it's best to just turn around and find an alternate route."
John said that you need to be aware of what?s going on and be prepared.
"September Preparedness Month is a federal imitative and it's a wonderful initiative," said John. "Preparedness is a year round thing. You want to be thinking about it. You want to be making a plan and practicing your plan and remaining alert about what's going on year round. You just have to be ready for anything and not rule it out as a possibility. We obviously hope it doesn't happen, but it can."
Your help in planning and preparing will go a great distance in helping in their efforts to respond if disaster strikes. Together we can build disaster resilient communities through education and efforts to be ready.
