September Preparedness Month, Part 2

Monday, September 15th, 2014 -- 9:07 AM

-The thought of your family or business being impacted by a disaster is never a pleasant one. It is however, extremely important to plan ahead and be ready if disaster strikes.

That?s why each year the month of September is designated as National Preparedness Month to encourage residents to plan and prepare for disasters which may pose a hazard to them.

John Ross, Clark County?s Emergency Management Director, talked about the different things you can do to prepare for a disaster that won?t break the bank.

John said, "There are certain things you can do and they don't have to be budget busters. Things like having a three day supply of food and water in the house. Don't forget about people with special needs in your home. Whether it be babies needing formula or people with special dietary restrictions. Have extra clothes, extra blankets, a flashlight with spare batteries. A radio, a battery operated radio with spare batteries. Another excellent thing to have in your house is an All Hazards Radio."

John talked about the different resources available to people that can help them prepare for a disaster.

"There are numerous websites out there," said John. "Websites such as ready.gov, that's the federal level. The state of Wisconsin has the readywisconsin website. The American Red Cross has a website and we have some information on the Clark County Emergency Management webpage. It can really make a difference; I know it's not pleasant to think about, something bad happening, whether it be your house catching fire or a tornado damaging or destroying it or some other incident resulting in you having to evacuate your house. But, you have to do that. You have to think about being better prepared."

Your help in planning and preparing will go a great distance in helping in their efforts to respond if disaster strikes. Together we can build disaster resilient communities through education and efforts to be ready.
