Tax Levy Set at Neillsville School District's Annual Meeting
Tuesday, August 26th, 2014 -- 10:57 AM
-The Neillsville School Board, and a handful of Neillsville residents, approved the tax levy for the district for the upcoming school year. The tax levy was approved by ballot vote, with 14 voting yes and 0 voting no, and set at $3,536,534. This is a decrease of $277,794 compared to last year?s tax levy of $3,814,328. Neillsville?s tax levy has decreased every year since 2011 when it came in at just over $4 million. Keep in mind that this number will change once the district finds out how much money they?ll receive in state aid. Right now, they?re estimating until after the 3rd Friday count in September.
The main reason that the tax levy has decreased as much as it did this year is because the School District of Neillsville is debt free and the referendum that the district had passed several years ago has stopped with the $300,000 being provided by that no longer coming in.
This has its advantages and disadvantages. The tax levy for the district is lower, however, the district no longer has that taxable money to make need repairs to the building and to help balance the budget. District Administrator John Gaier did mention that the district may come in over budget this year without that money and depending on several other factors the district is facing.
