-A Withee man expected to enter a plea in his case, regarding the attempted mutilation of his dog, was not in court on Thursday due to a setback regarding his mental health.Back in May, a dog, named Sammy, was found in the City of Owen with a laceration to her lower jaw. The Owen Police Department believed she had been hit by a car so they took her to the Owen Veterinary Clinic where she required surgery and stitches to heal the wounds.
That same day, another Owen Officer had responded to the home of 65-year-old Charles Weissmiller after receiving a call that Weissmiller had mutilated himself. In searching for the body part he had removed, the officer discovered pieces of flesh with fur attached in the garbage. The officer had heard about the incident with the dog that morning and realized what happened. When the officer later questioned Weissmiller in the hospital, he admitted that he tried to skin the dog alive because he didn?t want her anymore.
Weissmiller was supposed to appear in court Thursday morning for an arraignment where he was expected to enter a plea, according to Clark County's Assistant District Attorney, of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. However, Weissmiller?s attorney stated that due to a setback in his client?s mental health, i.e. hearing voices again, he had been hospitalized and was unable to appear in court.
Weissmiller has been charged with felony mistreatment of animals. A $3,000 signature bond was filed against him and he is not allowed to have any contact with or possession of any animals.
