Rain for Some Crops Last Week

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014 -- 10:39 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Some crops got soaked while other areas of the state remained dry during the past week.

The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service said in Monday's crop report that a storm system moved through the west and south-central portions of the state on Monday of last week, bringing a lot of rain to some areas, but bypassing neighboring counties. The remainder of the week was dry and clear, with daytime temperatures in the 80s.

Topsoil moisture fell on average, with 43 percent short to very short statewide, compared to 33 percent short to very short the previous week. Reporters noted that dry conditions are slowing the growth of third crop alfalfa.

As of Sunday, about 82 percent of the state's corn crop was silking, with 20 percent in dough stage. Corn condition was rated 69 percent good to excellent. Soybeans were 88 percent blooming, with 65 percent setting pods. Soybeans condition was rated 70 percent good to excellent.
