Just in Time for the Clark County Fair, 4-H Celebrates 100 Years, Part 1

Tuesday, August 5th, 2014 -- 11:02 AM

-The Clark County Fair is happening this week and the Clark County 4-H is a big part of the fair.

The 4-H program is also celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. I spoke with three Neillsville 4-H members, Luke Meyer, Jenna Byrne and Katie Meyer, and they talked about what they do during the fair and other times of the year for 4-H.

Luke said, "I have a couple pigs that I raise. So, I'm taking pigs to the fair. Basically, I have to take care of them. I usually go to the tractor/truck pull on Friday night and hang with my friends. Out of the fair, I just do a lot of stuff out side. Go up to the farm. Do 4-H. Usually, in the summer, we pick up cans along the road once a year."

Jenna said, "For the fair, I'm taking hogs, two hogs, and a couple other projects like corn. I usually hang out with my friends, check out the rides and walk around and check out the animals. Out of 4-H, we usually have regular meetings, hayrides, or go tubing and have a spaghetti feast."

Katie said, "I'm taking two pigs and other projects like pictures and making book marks out of stamps. I just hang out with my friends at the fair and go on rides. Out of 4-H we go up to the farm and for 4-H we go tubing. We do the Angel Tree Project."

I also spoke with Melissa Kono, the CNRED Agent for Clark County and Interim 4-H Advisor, and she talked about the wide variety of projects the kids are doing for the fair.

"There are so many different projects," said Melissa. "It's just so commendable for the kids. I talked to some of the 4-H youth at our clean up event this morning and they're doing everything from bringing hogs and sheep to doing arts and crafts projects. They will do a little bit of everything. I think just an animal is a lot of work, but, on top of that, they're doing all these other projects too."

The Clark County Fair starts Wednesday and runs through Sunday the 10th.
