City of Marshfield and Wisconsin State Railroad Commission Continue to Study Recent Surge in Vehicle/Pedestrian vs. Train Accide

Thursday, July 31st, 2014 -- 8:15 AM

-The City of Marshfield and the Wisconsin State Railroad Commission are continuing to tread familiar tracks: What do we do about the train accidents in the city?

Wednesday?s fatal accident involving a train and pedestrian is the second to happen this week and just one of a handful of accidents that have happened with the past year. There were a few instances of vehicles either parked on the tracks or drove too quickly and hit the train. Plus, there was another incident this past winter when a man tried to walk across the tracks while a train was coming, slipped on some ice, fell and couldn?t get back up.

Now, Central Wisconsin is considered to be the epicenter for the entire national railroad industry. The East Veterans Parkway track is considered a ?hot track? meaning it see 35-40 trains running through there on a daily basis. But, officials still believe that there is no reason for there to be as many accidents as there has been.

A study was conducted recently about the incidents in the city and that information will be used to find a solution to help keep people safe. The city has also increased their enforcement around the train tracks for both vehicles and pedestrians, but they advise you to not trespass on the tracks, do not try to out-run a train, follow all of the warning signs provided at crossings, and most of all, use common sense. Don?t play games with a train because you will lose.
