Black River Falls Police Department Warns Residents about Telephone Scam
Tuesday, July 29th, 2014 -- 11:29 AM
-The Black River Falls Police Department is warning residents about a telephone scam going on in the area.Unfortunately, this is a scam we?ve all heard before. In one incident, a caller told a local resident that their grandson was in trouble in the eastern part of the country and requested bail money sent via Western Union. In another incident, a grandchild was said to be in the custody of the Mexican authorities and needed money to avoid a Mexican prison. In the second case, the kind hearted grandparent actually sent the money despite being warned not to.
The Black River Falls Police Department reminds residents to not fall for these types of scams. These unsavory, manipulative individuals will watch local papers and obituaries to get personal information to be used in the scam obtaining names of survivors and other information.
They will often use that information to create new identities to further their criminal activity and drain the bank accounts of individuals.
