Clark County Workforce Council's Message is Clear: Clark County Has Jobs, Final
Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014 -- 11:24 AM
-A team of business, education, clergy, workforce and economic development leaders organized under the Clark County Workforce Council have been meeting the past 14 months to create a long term, step-by-step strategy to increase our employee base, grow our companies, communities, residents and school student numbers. There are a handful of businesses from Owen, Neillsville, Colby and more represented on the Workforce Council. The employers mentioned, during the July 16th meeting last week, how concerned they are in terms of businesses in Clark County.
They said they've faced the problem of being unable to find both skilled and unskilled workers for the past 5 to 6 years. The worry that if that trend continues, the businesses in the county will close their doors and move elsewhere, taking the people with it.
Another big hurdle the county employers say they're facing is, sadly, the job ethic of today?s generation. Employers say young adults today feel they are entitled to a specific job or, the complete opposite, a job is beneath them. They also said they lack major soft skills like showing up to work on time, doing their job, following orders and more.
The employers said they?d like to see more support from county high schools in helping teach students about soft skills and the jobs available here in Clark County. They said they're not looking for whole new programs because they know schools are stretched to the limits these days, but they?d like more support as more people and families would also be beneficial to the districts.
