Speakeasy Wins Best Bar Burger Contest

-Four local establishments recently braved the competition to vie for the title of Best Cheeseburger in town.The contest was held on Saturday, July 12th during Neillsville Heritage Days in picturesque Schuster Park and sponsored by the Neillsville Area Chamber of Commerce. Touted to become an annual Heritage Days activity, the competition was billed as The Best Bar Burger Contest with this year?s mission to identify the best cheeseburger.
The discriminating palates of eight judges seated in the main park pavilion evaluated each entry against six criteria and selected Speakeasy as the contest winner, awarding them the coveted ?Best Cheeseburger in Town? banner to be displayed at their establishment. Speakeasy, located on US Highway 10 west of Neillsville, is owned by Theresa Jackelen. For their entry, Chef Frank prepared ?The Uzi? burger, reflecting the bar?s prohibition era theme. The others competing in the contest included The Wildcat, The Brickyard and The Neillsville Country Club.
A second part of the competition called for the participation of the patrons at each establishment who were asked to purchase raffle tickets that would serve as votes for their favorite burger joint. A total of $308.00 was raised among all four contestants with The Wildcat garnering the most votes. A patron of The Wildcat, Irv Timmler of Greenwood, was selected to receive one half of the pot with the remaining funds awarded to the establishment.
