Wood County Board of Supervisors Will Hear Resolution Banning Aerial Manure Applications

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -There's a movement brewing in central Wisconsin this summer to ban the process of aerial manure application on farms in Wood County. On Wednesday, Judicial and Legislative Committee members voted 3-2 to send a resolution to the Wood County Board to halt the use of spraying animal waste through industrialized irrigation equipment or through pivoting drag hoses.
The vote was taken after the public was invited to speak during a discussion on the topic. Some residents feel the ban is necessary, saying manure pits also contain antibiotic residue as well as chemicals from waste water used to clean and sanitize milking equipment.
But others said the ban could affect over 200 farm operations and that a decision should be halted until the Department of Natural Resources completes a study on the effects of aerial manure spraying.
The Wood County board will take up the issue at its August meeting.
