Genealogist Coming to Neillsville Heritage Days, Part 2
Thursday, July 10th, 2014 -- 2:05 PM
-This Saturday, during Neillsville?s Heritage Days, residents will have the chance to learn about their family history. The group, Remembering the Mormon Loggers, is having genealogist Kathy Englebretson teach a workshop on the history of Neillsville and Clark County and helping people discover the history of their family.
Genealogy, by simple definition, is the study of family history. Kathy talked about why that?s important.
Kathy said, "In this day and age, we have families that are so fractured it's hard to know who you are or even what your past is. And, I won't say that when people start looking through their past that they're going to start finding a bunch of super heroes, but I will guarantee that there are a lot of very interesting people out there that are to be found. Whether it's on a local level or if they became the president or if they were just people that did ordinary, every day things. In terms of the church, we have a little different perspective on it. We have this idea that families are eternal. In the temple, we have special ceremonies where we take the names of our deceased relatives and we preform what we call a sealing ceremony where we seal families together for all eternity."
Kathy said her interest in genealogy got started at an early age.
"When I was in grade school my favorite subject in school was always history. That was my best subject," Kathy said. "When I was in 8th grade, we had a Nun that took us up to the Marshfield cemetery as a field trip. And I was fascinated with finding people in my family plot that I never heard of."
The workshop is being held on Saturday in Schuster Park from 9am to 6pm.
