Genealogist Coming to Neillsville Heritage Days, Part 1

Wednesday, July 9th, 2014 -- 11:07 AM

-This Saturday, during Neillsville?s Heritage Days, residents will have the chance to learn about their family History.

The group, Remembering the Mormon Loggers, is having genealogist Kathy Englebretson teach a workshop on the history of Neillsville and Clark County and helping people discover the history of their family.

Now, for those that may not know, Kathy discussed what genealogy is.

Kathy said, "Basic genealogy, or family history as some people call it, is collecting things, like birth certificates, marriage dates and death dates, and then putting them into some kind of a format, whether it's on paper; ow a days everybody uses computers as much as possible, but even the old bibles, people use to write things down in the bible on who died and who was born and when they got married and it was all a form of genealogy. And genealogy has actually been going on since the time of the bible. If you ever read your bible, God commanded Adam and Moses and Noah and all these different people to keep the genealogy."

If you stop by the workshop on Saturday, they don?t just want you to observe, they want you to be a part of it.

"We don't actually want people to just come and observe, we want them to work in it," Kathy said. "We've done this many times and what we do is we bring in computers and we'll have the internet hooked up. We welcome anybody with any kind of questions. We can give you steps on how to get you started if you're a beginner. If you're more advance, we'll try and help you with those brick walls that most people have. We will have access to internet sites that are both free and some that most people would be required to pay for, but will be free in our booth. We tell people to bring their names, bring paperwork, whatever little clues in those bits and pieces they might have that they want to find out more information about and we'll work off of that."

The workshop is being held on Saturday in Schuster Park from 9am to 6pm.
