Wet Weather Continues to Hinder Farmers, But Crops are in Good to Excellent Condition

Tuesday, July 8th, 2014 -- 1:04 PM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Though last week's wet weather conditions served as a hindrance for farmers trying to harvest hay and spray crops, there was a silver lining in terms of crop development.

The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service's weekly crop report noted that the majority of crops and pastures were in good to excellent condition. Unfortunately, extreme straight line winds did more damage to crops, trees and buildings across southern Wisconsin during the past week.

Topsoil moistures levels fell, with 30 percent surplus on average compared to 37 percent last week. Prevented spraying has also led to high weed pressure in some areas. Average temperatures last week were just slightly below normal ranging between 77 to 80 degrees.

In the corn fields, reporters say most of the crop was knee-high for the fourth of July or better and exhibiting normal development for this time of year. As of Sunday, about 77 percent of corn was in good to excellent condition. Soybeans were five percent blooming with condition rated 77 percent good to excellent.
