Wood County Looking Into Connecting their ATV Trails with Clark and Jackson Counties

(Marshfield News Herald) -Wood County officials won?t allow county highways to turn into ATV trails, but they will consider connecting some parks to trails in Clark and Jackson counties.A small group of ATV enthusiasts has approached the Wood County Conservation, Education and Economic Development Committee about allowing ATVs on some county highways to give riders a route to get to trails in Clark and Jackson counties. Although committee members don?t want ATVs using county highways as a trail system, they are willing to consider allowing a few highways to be routes to trail systems.
The original intent of the state statutes that allow ATVs on designated roads was to connect off-road trail systems, said Korey Trowbridge, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warden team supervisor. But, through the years, more and more municipalities have requested ATV routes in communities that don?t connect to trail systems.
North Wood County and Dexter parks would be good places to make trail heads for people to start out from, Trent Miner said, a member of the Wood County Conservation, Education and Economic Development Committee. The county could find a designated route from those parks to Clark and Jackson counties for people to use their trail systems.
The committee members decided the first step is to determine what local roads in the county currently allow ATVs. Once they have a map of those roads, the committee can discuss if it wants to make either park a trail head for riders.
